On September 28th, Earl Hunt Johnson, M.D., 90, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away joining his beloved wife, Anita, with our Lord.

Born on May 30, 1934, in Muncie, Indiana, Earl was the son of Lennie Hunt Johnson and Earl A Johnson. After graduating from Burris Laboratory School, Earl went to college at Ball State University and then received his MD from Indiana University’s School of Medicine. Throughout his life Earl was an avid supporter of both schools and a diehard fan of the Hoosiers. Together with members of his family, there were many hours spent attending games and cheering on the Cream and Crimson. In honor of his father, Earl created the Earl A Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, an endowment supporting undergraduate students at Ball State seeking a degree in education.

Earl married Anita Sue Thompson on September 21, 1957. Throughout 63 years of marriage, they laughed and loved each other until Anita’s death in 2022. They raised four children: E. Ronald Johnson (wife Daiva), Anne L. Johnson, Beth J. Harvey (husband Bill), and Eric D. Johnson (wife Susan). Earl and Anita welcomed nine grandchildren into their home. All his children and grandchildren survive him along with his sister, Margaret Hunt Thomas and many nieces and nephews; his sisters Eleanor Groom and Patricia Diebel preceded him in death.

Earl loved the practice of medicine and was an original partner of Walton, Johnson, and Pile, now Central Indiana Urology. He cared deeply for his patients and was respected by his colleagues and staff. Away from work, Earl was an avid golfer, fisherman, and bird enthusiast. He wasn’t a particularly great golfer, but he always seemed to find a way to make a putt when it mattered. In retirement, Earl and Anita made Fairhope, AL their winter home.

After their children were grown, Earl and Anita filled their home with German Shorthaired Pointers, and he became a lifetime member of Pheasants Forever. Earl made annual summer fishing trips to Ontario, Canada where his surgical skills were put to a test filleting fish on a boulder. His fondest moments were spent with a fishing pole in his hand or following a dog through the fields in search of an elusive Ring-necked pheasant.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Ball State University Foundation in care of the Earl A Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2800 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie, IN 47304.

Earl was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), 9700 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, IN on Thursday, October 3rd at 2pm. Visitation will begin there at 1pm, until the time of service. Graveside services will follow the funeral service.
