Dwight Lee Gilbert went to be with The Lord surrounded by his loving wife and children on January 19, 2022. He was 79 years and 351 days old. He was born on February 2, 1942 in Chicago, IL to Rev. Paul and Mabel Gilbert.
He was raised mostly in Northern Illinois and moved frequently for his father’s job as a pastor in the Methodist Church. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Evansville University in 1966. He had a long and successful career at Naval Avionics that spanned into the merger with Raytheon until his retirement in 2001. He loved fishing, camping and woodworking, but mostly he loved creating adventures for his family and friends. From scavenger hunts to creative dinner menus, he was always finding ways to make the people around him laugh. He was an excellent storyteller and even better listener. His love of all things moose was well known by his friends and family where he was affectionately referred to as Uncle Moose and Grandpa Moose. He was very involved in his church, Castleton United Methodist since 1978 and had many lifelong friends that fellowshipped with him over meals, card games and shenanigans.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beth, and by his three children, Chris, Laurie (Andrew) and Todd (Katie) and 4 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Gavin, Violet and Mary, his brother, Wayne (Laurel) and 5 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved dogs, Buffy and Moosie Sue.
Visitation is at Flanner and Buchannan in Broad Ripple on Thursday, January 27 from 4-7pm. Services will be held at Castleton United Methodist on Friday, January 28 at 11am. Memorial contributions can be made to UMCOR in lieu of flowers.
