Dwight L. Pottenger

November 1, 1925 — January 31, 2021

Zionsville, Indiana

Dwight L. Pottenger, 95, of Zionsville, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away on January 31, 2021. He was born on November 1, 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana as the son of Dwight and Clara Pottenger.
Dwight served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator and Classifications Assignment Officer. After service, he began a long and successful career at Central Rubber & Supply until leaving in 1978. After leaving Central Rubber, he worked at both A.W.I. and A.P.S, finally retiring from A.P.S.
Dwight was known as a genuinely nice guy and a real gentleman. He was a loving and fun-loving family man. He became the “man of the house” at age six when his father passed away yet the child-like joy that he received from simple pleasures never left him. If the “prize” from sending in cereal box tops wasn’t appropriate for his daughter, his nephews became the fortunate recipients. Nothing tasted better to him than hot dogs cooked over an open fire at a state park. Gatherings with neighbors on Norwaldo brought about lifelong friendships and wonderful memories. Always a fun dad, he was a fun uncle, brother-in-law, eventually becoming a fun father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Dwight loved playing cards of all kinds and looked forward every month for years to his couples Bridge club. Family gatherings often included playing Tripoli, a game that even the younger family members could play. In his assisted living facility, he and a dedicated group became enthusiastic Euchre players.
Retirement brought many fun new hobbies and interests to Dwight. He became an avid gardener, creating a fruitful garden from an empty lot previously filled with weeds. He was proud of his harvest and shared generously. He and his wife, Judy, loved going to Las Vegas to do a little gambling and enjoy the great food. They also traveled several places with daughter, Betsy, and son-in-law Michal and family, again enjoying fun times and great food. A loving grandfather, he and Judy not only supported their grandchildren any way they could, they “adopted” Betsy’s in-law’s children and supported them in their school events as well.
Dwight is survived by his daughter Betsy (Michal) Howden, grandson Christopher (Samantha) Howden, granddaughter Alexandra (William) Ellison, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, older sister Jane (Bob) Dawson, and wife, Judy.
At this time due to COVID 19 the family will be holding private services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to Zionsville Presbyterian Church or Outreach (Hope for homeless youth).
