Duane Gerald Inks

September 30, 1935 — October 16, 2021

Indianapolis, IN

Duane Inks often said, “It isn’t just what you do that matters. It’s who you are.” It mattered a great deal to many people who Duane was—as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, son, and friend. He died on October 16, 2021.

Born on September 30, 1935, in Wisconsin Rapids to Mark and Myra Inks, Duane Gerald Inks and his twin brother, Wayne, grew up in Beloit, WI, and attended a one-room schoolhouse taught by their mother. Duane went on to get a Bachelor of Arts from Beloit College and a Masters degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of Illinois. He served in the Army and then had a 30-year career in human resources for Eli Lilly.

Outside of work, Duane had a talent and passion for woodworking. He built beautiful furniture and spent time renovating many homes. He delighted in fixing things around the house, saying, “We know we’re going to solve the problem – the fun part is figuring out how.” Those who loved him knew they could also often find him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, ready for conversation.

He was active in his church, Castleton United Methodist, serving for a time as lay leader. He spent years as a volunteer driver for the Interfaith Hospitality Network and the Red Cross.

Many will remember Duane for his quick wit, his superbly delivered anecdotes, his relish for coining sayings and spinning fantastical stories, and his gentle, humble humor. He embraced the difficult questions and puzzles of life and encouraged others to do the same, remaining intellectually curious, compassionate, and deeply thoughtful until his death.

He found strength, comfort, and joy in Linda, the love of his life and wife of 47 years. Together, they created a warm and happy home. He is survived by Linda and children Gerry (Lisa), Chris, Michael, David Luken, Julie Heger, Sarah Jones (Chris Jones), and Lisa (Matt Griffith). He had eleven grandchildren: Emma, Jack, Clare, and Joseph Luken; Liam and Lily Heger; Quentin, Violet, and Isabel Jones; and Myra and Gus Griffith-Inks. He is also survived by his twin brother, Wayne (Ann), and was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Gaille Avakian, and his parents. The size of his family was matched only by his love for everyone in it, and the kindness and generosity he shared with family, friends, and strangers.

Visitation will be Friday, October 22,  from 12:00 to 2:00pm, and a memorial service will follow at 2:00pm, at Castleton United Methodist Church, 7101 Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis.
