Dr. Orbrey O." Phipps, Jr.

Dr. Orbrey O. Phipps Jr., 93, of Indianapolis, passed away July 17, 2017. He was born in Coalmont, Indiana on December 17, 1923.

Dr. Phipps graduated from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1956. After practicing dentistry for 23 years, he returned to school to pursue his interest in TMJ dysfunction. He attended Logan University where in 1982 he received his second doctorate degree, this time as Doctor of Chiropractic.

After retiring in 1997, Dr. Phipps and his wife Susie divided their time between their home in Indianapolis and their Florida condo. Being a lifelong learner, he pursued Culinary Arts at Ivy Tech, taught classes at the IU School of Dentistry, and even worked with the beach patrol in Florida. He also provided mobile dentistry services as part of the SMILE Program, which offers in-school dental care for all children, including those who have an inability to pay.

Dr. Phipps was a member of the American Dental Association, a lifetime member of the Indiana Dental Association, and a member for over 60 years of the Indianapolis District Dental Society. He was a 33rd Level Mason as well as a Shriner, and attended the Millersville Lodge and the Scottish Rite. He was also a licensed real estate broker with F.C. Tucker.

He also served his country in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Phipps is survived by his wife, Susie; children: Heidi (Ford) Goble, Sarah (Scott) Kiley, Dr. Paul (Nancy) Phipps, John (Julie) Phipps, Becky (John) Phillips, Teresa (Mike) Cox; and grandkids: Zachary, Ziva, Zoey, Megan (Tanner), Lauren, Daniel, Robbie, Rachel, Teddy, Drew, Jack, Anna, Ben, and Joseph.

The family of Dr. Phipps would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Keith Logie and the staff of the IU Fishers Cancer Center, who they consider a part of their extended family. They would also like to thank the Transitions Hospice team for their unwavering comfort and compassion during such a difficult time. They feel truly blessed to have had such wonderful care given to Dr. Phipps and the rest of the family.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 21, 2017 from 4pm until 8pm. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 11am at Flanner and Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St, Indianapolis. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
