James Joseph Szwed, MD, passed away peacefully at home onSeptember 4, 2017. Jim is preceded in death by his father WalterSzwed and his mother Helen Szwed. Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan onApril 8, 1939.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Kathryn Szwed;his sister, Beverly Palermino of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; his son, Dr.Joseph Szwed and his wife, Amy Szwed of Zionsville, Indiana; his son, Dr.Thomas Szwed and his wife, Charise Szwed of Jacksonville, Florida; hisdaughter, Dr. Ellen Szwed of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his daughter, Dr. KathrynSzwed Thompson and her husband, Patrick Thompson; his beloved grandchildren,Patrick Szwed, Michael Szwed, Andrew Szwed, Matthew Szwed, and Jamie Thompson;and all of his beloved nieces and nephews.

Jim received his undergraduate degree from Loyola Universityof Chicago; his medical degree from Georgetown University; and completed hisresidency in internal medicine and fellowship in nephrology at IndianaUniversity. Jim was on faculty at the IU School of Medicine for 13 years;participated in nephrology research and published multiple articles. Hepracticed medicine as a nephrologist and internist for over 50years. James provided health care for uninsured of Indianapolis atthe Lighthouse Mission, Gennesaret Free Clinic and the Good Samaritan Clinic forover 25 years.

He loved spending time with his family; working in thegarden; watching IU football and basketball games; playing the piano; spendingthe summers at Clearwater Beach, Florida; and walking his rescue dogs.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to theindividuals who provided care for Jim during these last five years-SeasonsHospice, in particular, Antonio Rippy, Chris Schrage, Brian Kelly, the womenand men of Fire Station 12 and special thanks to his caregivers for the lastthree years, Twana West, Angie Thurman, Kim Hopkins and Sherise Robinson whosetremendous care, patience and support enabled Mary K to care for Jim in thehome.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, September 9at 11 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 3354 W. 30thStreet, Indianapolis. Visitation will be on Friday, September 8 at Flanner andBuchanan- Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. W. Drive, from 5-9 PM, witha prayer service at 8 PM. Entombment will be in Washington Park North Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made toSt. Michael the Archangel Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Gennesaret FreeClinic of Indianapolis, Indiana and the Good Samaritan Free Clinic ofIndianapolis, Indiana.
