It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Whitney, age 78, on February 1, 2025. Douglas was born on September 11, 1946, and left this world peacefully, surrounded by those he loved. A man of deep convictions, he lived life on his terms, with no hesitation and no regrets.
Douglas enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, whether it was fishing on a quiet lake, camping under the stars, or cooking out for his loved ones. He spent countless hours enjoying his front porch swing, watching the world go by, and reminiscing about the good old days. His pontoon boat was a beloved retreat, offering him a place of serenity, while he could often be found admiring the hummingbirds that visited his yard. He made sure to keep their feeder full, as he took great joy in their visits.
He had two sides to him: a man of strong will who knew exactly what he wanted, and a soft spot for those who mattered most to him. Whether you agreed with him or not, you knew where you stood—Douglas always chose his way. He worked hard throughout his life, retiring after many years as a union laborer with Brody Campbell Masonry, and before that serving as a special deputy for the Sheriff's Department. His commitment to his work and to his community never wavered.
Douglas was especially devoted to his family, a source of pride and love in his life. His heart swelled with joy when he spent time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the true treasures of his life, and he was their biggest cheerleader, imparting wisdom and love at every turn.
He leaves behind his cherished family, including his children, Lynn (Danny) Slaybaugh, Bonnie (Jim Ralph) Patterson, Benji Whitney (Heather Walsh), and step-son, L.B. Swafford (Misty Gross); his siblings, Jeanna Johnson (John) and Jeffery Whitney (Sue); his grandchildren, Rockland Golden II (Gabrielle), Sheila Tucker (Justin), Aaron Golden (Kinsey), Rutger Golden (Megan), Shady Golden (Chelsea), and Cameron Skivers; his 12 great-grandchildren; and his step-grandchildren, Jamie Ralph, Sabrina Ralph, Brittany Williams, Danny Slaybaugh III, and L.B. II.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Francis Whitney; his loving wife, Jeanette Whitney; and his sister, Roberta “Sue” Price.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 1PM. Friends and family may gather from 11AM until the time of the service. All will be held at Flanner Buchanan—Memorial Park.
