Dorothy Marie Hiatt

September 17, 1923 — April 28, 2017

Dorothy Marie Hiatt, 93, of Indianapolis passed away on April, 28, 2017 surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born in Brownsburg, IN on September 17, 1923 to John and Kathaleen (Crouch) Portwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Al and Herman Portwood; her first husband, Bob Biltimier, great-grandson Joshua Hiatt; and her husband of 58 years, Jack W. Hiatt.
She is survived by her brother Don (Maggie) Portwood; her 3 children; Bob (Verna) Hiatt, Steve (Lewie-Bob) Hiatt, and Beverly (Davis) Goforth; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1941. She worked at American Art Clay then at Eli Lilly. She was hired the day prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. She told stories of working in the plant portion of Eli Lilly when the men had gone off to war. Later she went to business college and worked in the administrative offices at Lilly until she resigned to be at home with her children.
Dorothy was a long time devoted member of Allisonville Christian Church. She taught in the preschool for nearly 30 years. Dorothy had a special heart for children. She also loved to cook and bake and would never let anyone leave her home hungry. A couple of her specialties were apple pies and zucchini bread. Another passion was gardening for which Dorothy had a very green thumb. Up until age 90, she still grew amazingly delicious tomatoes. Crocheting was another favorite pass time. There are many scarves and blankets of her love keeping people warm in this world today.
Together Dorothy and Jack enjoyed travel, bowling, golf and fishing. They had great fun on a trip they won to San Francisco in their early retirement. The long time family vacation spot was Houghton Lake, Michigan. The lake became a family tradition which is now being carried on by the family including the fifth generation.
Dorothy was a godly woman whose faith and love were evident to everyone she met. Her pastor’s saying of Dorothy is, “To know her is to love her”. She will be dearly missed.
