Dorothy L. Garriott

March 12, 1929 — February 20, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

Dorothy Lucille (Goodman) Garriott, the elder daughter of Walter F. and Elsie M. (McElroy) Goodman, was born March 12, 1929, in Indianapolis, IN.  In her youth, Dorothy was a dedicated student and aspiring pianist.  A member of the National Honor Society, she graduated fourth in her class from Beech Grove High School in 1947 and attended Arthur Jordan Conservatory for one year before deciding that a career in music was not for her.  Her grammar and writing skills served her well while working slightly more than three years as a proof-reader at Union Title Abstract Company.  During her senior year of high school Dorothy met her future husband and the love of her life, Robert Garriott.  They were married Christmas Eve, 1948, and had more than 60 years together before his unexpected death in March 2009.

The first of Dorothy and Bob’s three children, Michael, was born January 9, 1951, followed by a daughter, Kathy, born March 9, 1952, and a second son, James, born July 16, 1957.  Shortly after Michael’s birth, the young family moved to Franklin Township where Dorothy resided until transferring to Greenwood Village SNF in August 2021.  Family always came first with Dorothy and the best times of her life were spent with relatives near and far, whether in person, via hand-written letters, or on the telephone. As a child she loved the trips she made with her parents and sister, June, to visit her father’s family in Georgia and her mother’s family in southwestern Indiana.  As an adult, she loved the many camping vacations taken with Bob and the kids seeing different parts of the country and spending time together.

Over the years, Dorothy had varied hobbies.  She was interested in the wildlife that frequented the home site and never tired of watching the birds, squirrels, and other critters.  She also enjoyed the many dogs and cats that the family owned over the years.  She was a skilled seamstress and prior to taking in clothing alterations on her own, had worked doing alterations for Blocks department store and for Leon Tailoring.  She enjoyed embroidery and made several pieces for her own home and for family members. She was also an avid reader and particularly fond of true stories of people overcoming tough odds to prevail in the end.

Dorothy is survived by; son, Michael (Brenda) (Falls City, NE); daughter, Kathy (Golden Valley, AZ); five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, husband, and son, James.
