Today the world is a little lonelier with the passing of our beloved GG, Dorothy Allen who passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. She lived her 96 years with grace and dignity, always thinking of others before herself. Born December 28, 1920 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Elsie and Horace Hockett, she graduated from Arsenel Technical High School in 1940 and married her high school sweetheart, Richard L. Allen on August 9, 1941. They were married for 73 wonderful years until his death. Dorothy served as a secretary at Old Bethel Methodist Church for many years, which she enjoyed. She loved the retail business and excelled at doing the window decorations for all of the holidays for the dress shops. Among her many accomplishments in life was the best tasting strawberry shortcakes anyone has ever made and her flakey pie crusts that no one could ever duplicate. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, even though they lived 900 miles away. She would have them come for the summer and shower them with love and affection. This was a special time for both the grandchildren and herself. Later, she enjoyed having time with the great grandchildren.
She is survived by her 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Billie Jo and Homer Thomason and Joyce Ann and Michael Cochran; 3 grandsons, Michael, Patrick (Lana) and Matthew (Joey) Goldsmith; and 6 great grandsons Connor, Evan, Ethan, Brandon, Turner and Taylor Goldsmith. She is also survived by her youngest sister Judy Laughlin and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her 4 sisters LoLa Mae Hockett, Evelyn Blackwood, Betty York and Ruth Fisher.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46229. Visitation 10:00 AM until the service time. Burial will be in Washington Park East Cemetery.
