Dorothy Jeanette Winternheimer, 91, of Carmel, IN, and a lifelong resident of Evansville, IN passed away on July 9, 2023 at Sunrise on Old Meridian. She was born on August 22, 1931, in Evansville, IN to Carl and Helen Meyers.
Dorothy attended Bosse High School where she met her life’s love, Dr. Paul Louis “Louie” Winternheimer, to whom she was married for nearly 60 years. Dorothy accompanied Louie as he completed his degrees at Purdue University, the University of Iowa, and Indiana University. In 1957, they permanently returned to Evansville when Louie joined the faculty of the University of Evansville, where he was a professor for 39 years. She was employed by the Purdue Memorial Union and the Evansville Gas Company.
In her free time, Dorothy was an accomplished artist, avid birdwatcher, antique collector, and gardener. Mostly, she looked forward to time with her grandchildren. She was generous with her time, as an active member of the University of Evansville Faculty Dames, a Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) volunteer, and as the Dexter Elementary “Picture Lady”, educating students about famous artwork and artists.
Dorothy enjoyed traveling. One highlight was living for a semester at Harlaxton Manor in England. While there, she visited Paris, France, where she appreciated the art at the Louvre. She also went to Holland to visit Anne Frank’s home. In London, she was able to find Goodge Street, named after a family ancestor. She also enjoyed many trips with her family to destinations in the US and Mexico.
Dorothy attended Bethel United Church of Christ, and later Christian Fellowship Church. She taught Sunday School andparticularly loved her close friends, support group, serving together and their many adventures.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and her brother, Steve Meyers. Dorothy is survived by her son, Dr. Louis Winternheimer (Lisa); daughter, Amy Scott (Christopher); six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise on Old Meridian (where she was a resident from 2012), and Paradigm Hospice for their loving care and support.
