Dorothy Carruthers
Of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the age of 86. She was born on July 9, 1932 in Blackhawk, Mississippi to Alexander and Christina Phillips.
Dorothy spent most of her youth in Mississippi; her primary education was completed at Blackhawk school in Coila. She would then move to Indianapolis, Indiana and attend Crispus Attucks, where she would major in sewing. This launched Dorothy’s lifelong career as a seamstress. She also fulfilled the occupation of being a Domestic Custodian and would eventually retire from Western Electric.
Dorothy accepted Christ at a young age and faithfully alternated her attendance between Light of the World Christian Church and Eastern Star Church. She had a good sense of humor, was very high spirited, and loved to talk about drinking gin but never drank a day in her life. Dorothy always looked forward to going to the casino and playing scratch offs. She had a green thumb and loved gardening, going on walks, and going to movies; western movies were a favorite of hers. But above all, she loved spending quality time with her “small” family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Christina Phillips and siblings, James, Bow, Alphonza, Leo, John, Odie, Hildrey, Dora, and Sara.
She will be sorely missed by her three daughters, Alvernia Johnson (Darryl), Lillian Johnson (David), and Pearl Watson; grandchildren, Darryl, and Ashley; Sister-in-law: Ruth Anthony; Brother-in-law: T. Streater; and a host of nieces and nephews.
“Celebration of Life “ 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He causes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
