Doris W. Hicks

Doris Mae Woods Hicks, formally a long-time resident of Indianapolis, IN and the wife of the late Reverend Luther C. Hicks (d.1990), was called home to rest by her Heavenly Father on June 27, 2018. She was 89 years old.

Born August 20, 1928 in Chicago, IL to Thomas & Vivian Woods, Doris was one of nine siblings. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the Chicago Teacher’s College. Doris enjoyed a distinguished and well-respected career as a Public School Teacher both in Chicago (1950-1966) and Indianapolis (1966-1990) public schools systems before retiring in 1990. In addition to being an active member of the Indianapolis community, Doris was a national leader in Housing equity advocacy and twice served as President of National Neighbors during which time she testified before congress on fair housing policy.

She is survived by her three sons: Rev. Luther S. Hicks of Chicago, IL and his wife Brenda, Lawrence S. Hicks of Stockton, CA and his wife Rita, and Dr. LeRoi S. Hicks of Wilmington, DE and his wife Susan. In addition, she is survived by her youngest sister Elizabeth McClendon from Chicago, IL, seven grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. Doris had a strong faith in God and love for her church and family. For all she could serve, the impact of her deeds are everlasting.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 16th, 2018 from 11-12pm at Living Word Baptist Church 4934 East 21st Street. Funeral service will follow at 12pm.
