Doris Janet Lewis Davis Offutt
Doris Offutt died March 11, 2023 at 90 years old. Doris was born on July 24, 1932 in Mechanicsburg (Henry County), Indiana. Her family gives thanks to the kind and generous staff at Bickford of Carmel for their care and attention to Doris in her last years and final illness.
Doris was the youngest child of Harlan and Ella Lewis and is preceded in death by her brothers Jack and Gerald Lewis and her sister Marge Lewis Harsh. Doris attended grade school in Mechanicsburg and high school in Middletown where she was a Yell Leader.
Doris graduated as a Registered Nurse from the IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1953. She worked several years in the Newborn Special Care Nursery at Women’s Hospital, and before that at Community Hospital. Doris was also nurse for general practitioner Doctor R W Mouser in Broad Ripple and Industrial Nurse at Howard W Sams, Inc. of Indianapolis.
Doris loved children and babies and worked during her retirement for Sitters to the Rescue and as a Child Advocate for Marion County courts.
Doris was a founding member of the United Methodist Church of the Savior located on 62nd Street in Devonshire.
Doris is survived by her son, John (Kathy) Davis, her daughter Dana Thomas (Jeff Meyer), her step daughter Jenny Toth; grandchildren Marshall Davis and Mollie Davis Folk, Samantha Thomas Hamilton and Dr. Joe Thomas, Will Davis and Holly Davis, Miranda Toth, Jessica Stoodley and Olivia Morgan Duca; great grandchildren Clyde and Cecilia Davis, Jiya Thomas, Charlie Edwards, Gavin Huard, Finn, Eli, and Lulu Stoodley, and Milo Herman Duca.
Doris is preceded in death by her loving husband of more than 40 years Frederick R Offutt, her son James H Davis, and her step daughter Rosie Duca.
Everyone knew Doris to be a generous and kind person who cared about others, took no bull, and stood to speak her truth out loud.
A memorial service for Doris and Fred will be held at a future date. We look forward to gathering with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations and memorials can be directed to the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation.
