Dorian Ursery

January 13, 1962 — November 10, 2016

Born in Louisville, KY on January 13, 1962, Dorian Urserydeparted this life far too soon at age 54, after a blessedly brief yet valiantbattle with cancer. He never allowed hisdiagnosis to dampen his joy for all the blessings he had received in this life.

Dorian’s family moved to Indiana when he was a child, and Dorianspent his adult life in and around the greater Indianapolis area. He attended Indiana State University andmaintained those college relationships throughout his life. He and his buddies met annually to play golfat different courses around the country. Dorian was passionate about his golf game, and took his clubs with himwherever he traveled, always in search of a new course, a new challenge.

Dorian loved music, and founded a DJ business while still in highschool. His DJ moniker was “Chocolate Chip” and he continued toDJ at nightclubs and special events during college and as a young adult. His friends affectionately referred to him as“Chip”, and the nickname stuck with him throughout his life.

Dorian is a veteran, having served in the Air Force Reserves forsix years.

Dorian had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He owned his own construction company, UrseryConstruction, specializing in residential energy efficiency, and had justrecently completed all the intense government requirements to become aHUD-preferred contractor.

Dorian began his career in the food and beverage industry. He managed the restaurants and bars at theIndianapolis Omni Hotel during his twelve years at the Omni. He was also the assistant facilities managerfor Madam Walker Theatre. Dorianparticipated as a chef in the Gourmet Gents fundraiser for nearly a decadehelping to raise funds for underserved girls. He knew his way around a kitchen and especially a grill. Cooking for his friends gave him so much joy.He knew how to display food to make it irresistible, so it is with both heavyhearts and heavy bodies that we bid him farewell.

Dorian’s other great passions were chess and traveling. In fact, Dorian could be described as a 21st Century Renaissance man—thebreadth of his knowledge and his diverse passions made him truly unique, andhis versatile talents will be missed.

Dorian’s parents, LouiseSanders and Franklin Ursery, predeceased him. Dorian is survived by his daughter, Dorian Danielle, 25, who lives inIndianapolis; his son, Samuel, 22, who is currently residing in Boise, ID; andhis step-son, Clifford Brooks, 30, now living in Ft. Myers. Dorian also cared for Ara Vaughn, Cliffordand Samuel’s cousin, during her formative childhood years. And Dorian was a father figure to Quinntinand Nicolas Bridges for the last ten years of his life.

Dorian is survived by his brother, Greg, and Greg’s son,Nicholas; and his two step-brothers, Darryl and Jerry. He is also survived by a host of closefriends, aunts, cousins, and extended family.

Lastly, Dorian is survived by Barbara Bridges, whom heaffectionately referred to as the love of his life. They brought each othermuch happiness, joy and delight during their nearly ten-year relationship.

Dorian gave unselfishly of his time and his talents and wasalways available to help a friend in need. He was a man of integrity, so kind-hearted and positive. He wasadventurous and curious and felt at home everywhere he traveled. He adored being surrounded by family andfriends–the laughter, joy and sense of true community from those gatheringssustained him. And he, in turn,sustained us all by nurturing our souls and nourishing our hunger. He lived life to the fullest, even to theend.
