Dorafaye “Dee” Greenwood Hershberger, 98, long-time resident of Speedway, Ind., passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on January 9, 2019. Dorafaye was born in Jasonville, Ind., on March 9, 1920, to parents Ira Bert Greenwood and Susan Verna Miller. She was the second youngest of eight children. Dorafaye received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education (with a home economics concentration) at Indiana State University. She married her husband, Robert Ross Hershberger, on May 27, 1945, and they had two children: Roger Ross and Sandra LeSue.
Dorafaye began her career in education in Waynetown, Ind., and taught at a number of other schools — including Indianapolis Public Schools and Marian College — before retiring from the Indiana Girls School in 1977. She was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Speedway for more than 55 years. She enjoyed discussing her faith, nutrition, and politics, playing the organ, and more than anything, spending time with her family.
Dorafaye was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hershberger (57) on September 4, 1978. She was also preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings.
She leaves behind two children and their spouses: Roger (and Kathy) Hershberger of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sandra (and Mark) Southman of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jenni (and Scott) Nolan and Lindsey Hershberger of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Maria Southman and Paul (and Emily) Southman of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Bradley Hershberger; Jeremy Brewer; Emma, Kellen, Henry, and Brody Nolan; and Ella, Adalyn, and Josie Southman. She is also survived by many other loved ones: nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and their families.
Visitation with family will be held at Flanner Buchanan-Speedway, 2950 N. High School Rd., on Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 11AM to 1PM, with the service following. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
As she wrote to so many of her loved ones, Dee, we “love you eternally, through Christ.”
