Donna Sue Baker

Donna Sue Baker, 75, Carmel, passed away July 31, 2018.   She was born September 18, 1942, in Kansas City, KS the daughter of the late Jerome J. and Dorothy E. (Rollheiser) Hurley.

In the late 1950’s the family moved to Oklahoma City, OK where she attended Mt St Mary’s High school.  After graduating from high school she spent 2 years in Denver, CO studying with the Sisters of Mercy.  Next she went on to The Sisters of Mercy School of Nursing in Ft Smith, AR.  After graduating in 1964 she worked as a registered nurse at the Children’s Hospital in Kansas.  In 1967 she moved to Ann Arbor, MI with her older sister, Mary Ann.  There she met George Baker and they married in 1969.  In 1970 they moved to Indianapolis, IN. 

After staying at home to raise her children she returned to nursing in 1985 where she worked with teens with addictions.  In January 1989 she began her long career at Riley hospital working on the Teen unit, Stem Cell unit, and finished her career in outpatient oncology/hematology clinic in June 2010.  She loved each and every child as if they were her own.  Many patients remember her fondly and she continued to follow their lives and accomplishments.

She is survived by her four children, John (Jill) Baker, Mark Baker, Ellen Baker, and Elizabeth (Scott) Longmuir; six grandchildren (Savannah, Jaidyn, James, Carson, Sydney and Farren) ; and a sister, Jackie (Ealie) Holliman.  She was preceded in passing by a sister, Maryann Dormann.

She enjoyed reading, scrapbooking, sewing, gardening, coffee, chocolate and spoiling her kids and grandkids. 

A special ceremony performed by the Nursing Honor Guard will take place at 2:00 p.m. followed by a memorial gathering until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the Riley Children’s Foundation or to Susan G.
