Donald W. Legreid

June 25, 1953 — November 22, 2020

Donald W. Legreid, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the age of 67 in Noblesville, IN. Those lucky to know Don will remember his caring spirit, sense of humor, and booming laugh.

He was born in Fergus Falls, MN on June 25, 1953 to parents Melvin and Thelma Legreid. The family resided in Bismarck, ND before moving to Minot, ND in 1961. He was active in sports and music throughout his childhood. Don graduated high school in Minot and was part of the 1971 state championship basketball team.

Following high school, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where he majored in political science and history. He built many lasting relationships at Concordia and met the love of his life, Bonnie, during his freshman year. They both shared a passion for music and sang together in the Concordia Choir. He continued singing through his adult life as part of the Master Chorale, church choirs, and at numerous weddings and special occasions.

Don and Bonnie married in 1974 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Moorhead. He then attended law school and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1978. They settled in Moorhead where they raised their four children and made many lifelong friends. He loved supporting his children in all their activities. He developed a passion for hockey, especially the Moorhead Spuds. He was President of the Moorhead Youth Hockey Association and held several other positions to support the program. He was active in the community, including at his church, where he served as President of the congregation.

Don pursued a career in healthcare law and worked 25 years for Lutheran Health Systems and Banner Health in Fargo, ND. He chose the non-profit healthcare field to practice law because he identified with a mission of serving local communities and helping people. He possessed natural leadership abilities and quickly became head of the legal department. He was known by colleagues for his integrity, empathy, and sharp mind.

In 2004, after raising all their children in Minnesota, he and Bonnie moved to Newtown Square, PA in suburban Philadelphia. Don accepted a position as General Counsel at Crozer Keystone where he worked until retirement in November, 2019.

Don and Bonnie enjoyed 16 years in Philadelphia and created wonderful new family memories. They were blessed to form close friendships to last a lifetime. They were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ardmore, PA. Don enjoyed being near major sports teams and became a season ticket holder for the Flyers and Phillies. As a history buff, he loved to give tours of the historical sites in Philadelphia to family and friends. He also loved supporting Bonnie in her music teaching career in Moorhead and Philadelphia. He was so proud of her accomplishments.

Don enjoyed a successful career but always prioritized his family first. He was a man of strong faith and had many interests. He loved sports, reading, and meeting new people. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family. In recent years, he and Bonnie traveled nearly every weekend visiting their children and grandchildren. They had recently moved to Indiana following Don’s retirement. He had an enormous impact on the lives of many, especially his family.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Legreid (Noblesville, IN); two sons: Tim (Adriana) Legreid (Centennial, CO), and Dan (Katherine) Legreid (Missouri City, TX); two daughters Amy (Peter) Jorgenson (Carmel, IN), and Kari (Joseph) Klein (Westfield, IN); 11 grandchildren: Carter, Johan, Hannah, Elsa, Elizabeth, Mason, Lilia, Cameron, Makayla, Evan, and Alice; niece Sarah Wiles and nephew Matthew Wiles. He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Thelma, and his sister Virginia.

A celebration of Don’s life will take place on Saturday, November 28th at 10:00AM EST. Due to current restrictions, the service will be held for immediate family with a livestream available.  We hope you can join us virtually by using this link provided to Donald Legreid services.
