Donald Ray Gilley, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away January 9, 2020. He was born January 15, 1936 in Harlan, Kentucky to Londa and Luna Gilley.
Though born in Kentucky, Don moved to Indiana as a young boy. He joined the United States Marines as soon as he was eligible and dutifully served his country until his honorable discharge on January 14, 1961. Our nation is forever grateful for his service. After his service, he went into automotive sales. Don and his family owned and operated many successful car lots in the Indianapolis area. He met the love of his life, Susan Brown, when the two were neighbors. They were married January 21, 1983 and spent 38 beautiful years together; they remain deeply in love at the time of his passing. Don enjoyed boating, racing boats, and everything water related. He also enjoyed hunting and traveling, especially to Florida. Don’s passing leaves an empty space in the hearts who were blessed enough to meet him; he was truly one of a kind.
Don is survived by his wife, Susie Gilley; sons, Ronny and Greg Gilley; sister, Treva Embry; a step-daughter, Fordena Culbertson-Wilson; and many loved grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Donald Ray Gilley; and his sister, Sue Reach.
All are welcome to attend Wednesday, January 15 from 4-8 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park, 425 N. Holt Road, Indianapolis, IN 46222. Funeral services will take place Thursday, January 16 at 1 PM, with visitation one hour prior. He will be laid to rest at Floral Park Cemetery immediately following services.
