Diane "Dee Dee" Kay Smith

Diane “Dee Dee” Kay Smith (Slayton) passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at age 67 in Greenwood, Indiana with her daughter, Carly, at her bedside. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 19, 1956, she was the youngest daughter to James and Barbara Slayton (Jobe). 


Diane grew up in the Twin Aire neighborhood of Indianapolis and went on to graduate from Howe High School in 1974. After high school, Diane moved to Florida where she had a brief modeling career and enjoyed time in the sunshine. 


After her stint in Florida, Diane lived a spirited life around Indianapolis. She was well known around the city for her outgoing personality, glamorous style, and beautiful smile. She had many groups of friends and especially enjoyed time out with her dear older sister, Susan. Their favorite place to visit was the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Diane met her former husband Glen Smith, who remained a lifelong friend and co-parent to daughter, Carly. 


Diane’s friendly demeanor and sense of adventure led to a successful career as a flight attendant for US Airways and American Airlines for 35 years. Her work took her on many travels around the world and left her with many beautiful memories and friendships. 


Outside of work, Diane enjoyed gardening around her home, watching movies, reading, and spending time with her family. She took pride in caring for her home and making it a beautiful place to live. 


Diane is survived by her beloved daughter Carly Smith; her mother, Barbara Slayton (Jobe); her sister, Susan Ryan (Slayton); and nephews Johnny Walker and Zackery Ryan. 


She is proceeded in death by her dear father James Slayton and baby sister Linda Slayton. 


Diane will be laid to rest in Washington Park East Cemetery. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. In honor of Diane, memorial contributions can be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
