Debra "Debbie" Jean Law

September 1, 1958 — August 15, 2022

Indianapolis, Indiana

Debra “Debbie” Jean Law, 63, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on August 15, 2022, from complications with cancer.

Debbie was born on September 1st, 1958, to Lillian and Russell Murrain in Indianapolis, Indiana. She graduated from Howe High School in 1976, where she was an honors student and cheered in the Hornet Honey cheer squad. Debbie landed her first job at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, starting in the mail room and working her way up to Director of Audit, Recovery, and Subrogation.

She later met Randy Law, and they wed in 1979, going on to have two daughters, Brittany & Chelsea. Debbie was a dedicated mother to her children while pursuing a career that would support her family. She earned the distinct title of “superwoman” after persevering through the hardship of losing her husband Randy, raising her young daughters, and pursuing entrepreneurship that brought her family to Laguna Niguel, California, and then eventually back to Indianapolis.

In 1999, she met her future husband Daniel (Dan) Cheak, and she gained a bonus daughter, Karey, in the process. Debbie’s career eventually moved her and Dan to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they enjoyed adventures in the desert city for six years. In 2018, they relocated to Indianapolis so that they could be closer to friends and family.

Debbie had a keen eye for beauty and style, and this was evidenced everywhere from her person to her home. She was a passionate gardener and would often spend her free time planting and tending to the gardens of her home. Anyone who would visit her house would remark how it looked like it should have been featured in Better Homes and Gardens and likened a visit there to being an oasis or staying at a resort. She loved home design and was the first to be involved when her daughters purchased their first homes.

Debbie was an immeasurably strong woman, and anyone who knew her could attest to her fortitude. She was a source of strength and comfort for many, a designated “rock” for her people and even passerby’s she met through all of her adventures. Opposite of this, she also showed great kindness and compassion. Debbie was a loving mother to her children and grandchildren and made it a point to pour her support into their passions and education. She loved and cared for animals and supported her community through donations and regularly giving blood. Debbie will be greatly missed and remembered always.

Debbie was predeceased by her husband Randy; her parents Russell and Lillian; her brother Stephen; her mothers- and fathers-in-law Hillard and Patricia Law and Donald and Mary Cheak; and her sisters-in-law DeeDee and Jennet Murrain.

She is survived by her husband Dan; her daughters Brittany Elliott (David), Chelsea Miller (Scott), Karey Stanton (Kyle); her brother Ronald Murrain; her niece Rhonda Murrain (Donny); her nephew Ricky Murrain; her sister-in-law Cheryl Malagon (Augie); her brother-in-law Brian Law; six grandchildren: Alaina, Wyatt, Bennett, Callum, Charles (Charlie), and Connell; and many dear friends.

The family requests that all flowers and notes be sent to Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park East Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 23rd from 11 AM -1 PM at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis), followed by a funeral service beginning at 1 PM.  Burial will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery.
