Debra (nee Powers) Burgei, age 73, passed away November 19, 2024, in Zionsville, Indiana. Born June 4, 1951, in Winchester, Indiana, Debra was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Debbie is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Dan; her son Chris (Kim) Burgei and daughter Jennifer (Nick) Sproull; as well as four cherished grandchildren Tyler, Zoe, Max, and Ella. She also leaves behind her brother Thom Powers, and sister Phyllis Starr. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Leo and Donna Powers and her brother Larry.
A gifted and dedicated educator, Debbie taught kindergarten for 36 years, touching the lives of countless children and their families. Her passion for teaching was matched only by her love for her family and friends. Outside of her teaching career, Debbie was known for her love of cooking and baking, reading, and her unwavering support of Indiana University basketball.
Debbie was a woman defined by her kindness, generosity, and loyalty. She will be remembered for her warmth, her nurturing spirit, and the joy she brought to everyone around her.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the IU School of Education or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Debbie’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and her legacy of love, care, and devotion will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
