Dean was born June 22, 1932 and raised in Mansfield, Ohio, living with his parents, W. Gail and Bernice Eccles; grandfather, William Eccles; and brother Ralph. Following his wedding, he and his wife Ruby lived in Michigan then again in Mansfield until they and their three children moved to Plainfield, Indiana in 1971.
Dean started working at age 12 as an elevator operator, doing an amazing variety of other jobs while growing up. He continued with odd summer jobs throughout the years. He completed his master’s degree in 1957. In the midst of his education years, he spent time serving as an Army chaplain’s assistant in Germany during the last years of the Occupation. He liked to tell others he attended 8 colleges and universities. His profession expanded from teacher to school counselor to school psychologist.
Dean was a member of Crosspointe Baptist Church. Prior to that, he was an active member of the Free Methodist and Nazarene churches.
He was a devout Christian, often heard singing hymns as he worked around the house. He loved vocal performance. He was known for his exceptional bass voice, enjoying singing until the end. His hobbies included woodworking, stained glass art, and travel. He boasted visiting all 50 states of the USA and 42 countries in his lifetime. He was known for his corny jokes and witticisms. Most of all, he treasured his family. His wife, Ruby, was the love of his life. They did everything together. No one could brighten his face like she; no one could calm him in the end like she. They were blessed to celebrate their 65th anniversary in August. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, loving them with all his heart.
