David Wayne Smith Ii

David Wayne Smith II, 59, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on March 1, 2023, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was born on November 2, 1963, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to David and Johanna Smith.

Wayne graduated from Carmel High School in 1982. A lifelong athlete, Wayne excelled in any sport he tried, culminating in back-to-back football state championship wins with the Carmel Greyhounds in 1980 and 1981. As a high school athlete, he was also selected to play in the Indiana All Star game.

Upon graduating high school, Wayne was awarded a scholarship to play football for Butler University. While at Butler, he was an all-conference football player and made many great friends as a Sigma Nu. He graduated in 1986 with a degree in business. After graduating, he moved to Wyoming to manage a cattle ranch and married his college sweetheart Chrissy on November 28, 1987. They were married for 35 wonderful years. Prior to the birth of their daughter in 1991, Wayne and Chrissy returned to Carmel, Indiana to start their new life together. Wayne was the proprietor of Clark Tire for over 30 years.

Over the years, Wayne has enjoyed many pastimes. A car-lover from childhood, Wayne loved to race cars. Always a fierce competitor, Wayne won acclaim behind the wheel of many different cars, from modified midgets to a 1967 racing corvette. He has always loved going to concerts, especially Bob Seger, and he and his friends loved to follow along on Bob Seger’s tours over the years and catch him in as many cities as possible. He also loved playing golf every chance he got, especially at Wolf Run and Bridgewater. But perhaps his greatest joy in life was watching his children pursue their goals, as a coach, a spectator, a sounding-board, and a devoted supporter.

Wayne always encouraged and inspired those around him to do their best. In everything that he did, he modeled acting with integrity and giving his all to get things done the right way. Those who loved him will always remember his quiet strength, dependability, and character.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Chrissy; his parents, David and Johanna; his children, Nicholette (James) Sloat and Colton; his brother Keith; and his granddaughter, Lillian.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 9, from 10 am to 1 pm, with a Memorial Service at 1 pm, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Drive, Carmel, Indiana 46032.
