David W. Smith

David W. Smith, 78, of Carmel, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021, at his home surrounded by family and friends. David was born March 24, 1943, in McKeesport, PA, to the late Clyde W. and Ethel J. Smith. He was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School and Indiana University, and he attended Purdue University, where he was a member of the Purdue glee club. David worked as a machine tool sales engineer for Machine Tool Affiliates for many years before retiring in 2019.

David is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, MaryAnn; children, Courtenay (Steve) Wagner, Michelle (David Hartzler) Hancock and Benjamin (Chelsey) Smith; daughter-in-law, Lindsey Smith; sister, Lynda King; sisters-in-law, Susan (Dan) Davies and Carol Smith; grandchildren, Tori (Jonathan) Bates, Adam (Priyanka Kothari) Hancock, Jake, Wes, Regan and Mia Wagner, and Evie and Beau Smith; great grandsons, Davis and Carter Bates; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Eli, on March 27, 2021, and his brother, Ken, on May 8, 2021.

David was a kind and gentle soul. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching and spending time at Moveover Lake near Terre Haute. Throughout his life, David often had one of his beloved dogs at his side or curled up at his feet. He was an amateur photographer and developed his own photos in his home dark room. He was a Boy Scout leader, accompanying his sons and their friends on numerous outdoor adventures. He loved music and was a lifelong fan of the blues.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to David’s special caregivers: his niece, Missy Cardenas; Murshell Freeman; Ed Lightfoot; and James Bailey. The family will always remember your love and compassion caring for David.

A service celebrating David’s life will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 22 at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel, where family and friends are invited to gather from 12:00 noon until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Brooke’s Place which provides counseling services to grieving children.
