David Charles Morton of Indianapolis died peacefully in his sleep Jan. 24 surrounded by family following an 18-month battle with cancer. He was 65.

David is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Lynne Morton; a daughter, Elizabeth Warren (Bruce); two sons, Jason Morton (Pam) and Daniel Morton; three grandsons, Enoch David, Jacob David and Harrison Bruce; a sister, Becky Owens (Russ); and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda Gail Morton; his father, David Dwayne Hardegree; and a brother, Dennis Morton.

Born Aug. 23, 1956, in Birmingham, Alabama, David was a 1974 graduate of Vincent High School in the Shelby County town of Vincent, Alabama, where he earned a varsity letter on the football field.

Upon graduating high school, David began a career in the automotive repair industry, helping operate a family-owned business before relocating to Indianapolis. In the early 2000s, David left the automobile repair industry to join the repair assessment side and became an insurance adjuster, a profession he retained until his retirement.

A dedicated family man, David’s passions lay in commitment to family.

“Nothing,” he often said, “is more important than family.”

Beyond his children and grandchildren, David also loved cooking, the beach, motorsports, golfing, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Indianapolis Colts.

But it was his wife, Lynne, the love of his life whom he met by fate in 1982 – they wed the following year – on an airplane flight from Indianapolis to New York, and his three children that remained the focus of his devotion.

A Memorial Gathering is set for 10am – 12pm with a Celebration of life following at 12pm Feb. 22 at Flanner Buchanan-Speedway Funeral and Cremation at 2950 North High School Road in Speedway.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in David’s name be made to the American Cancer Society.
