In Loving Memory of David Alan Hayfer
November 14th, 1953 – October 27th, 2021
David Alan Hayfer, or “Dave”, a proud veteran, beloved husband, father, and grandfather was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and passed away in his sleep on October 27th, 2021. He was recently diagnosed with Stage IV on September 28th and was put on hospice care a week before his passing, in his home, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Given permission in his final hour to let go and to end the suffering, we are blessed that he took his last breath right after the final prayer from his daughter. Dave was just a few weeks shy of his 68th birthday.
Dave was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 14th, 1953. Born to Jay Harrison Robinson and Vada Louise Morehead, he was adopted by Henry Robert Hayfer, or “Doc”, and Catherine Edna Costen (and later raised by Mary Elizabeth Hayes, or “Betty”.) He enlisted in the army at the age of 21 and valued his service highly as a Military Police Officer, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Dave served his country for over 18 years and was stationed in Fort Knox, Fort Harrison, Fort Sheridan, Germany, South Korea, and Johnston Island (near Hawaii).
While serving in the military and raising a family, Dave earned his Master’s in Business through the University of Maryland. After retiring from military service, he worked in IT at RCA for 9 years and later found his passion in teaching Business and Microsoft Program classes at the University of Indianapolis for over 20 years. In his free time, Dave enjoyed watching golf and various other sports, talk radio, doing DIY projects around the house with his daughter, spending time with family at parks and coffee shops, reading novels, working out at the YMCA, volunteering at the Kiwanis Club, and was a proud member of the NRA.
Dave is survived by his devoted wife Sue Hayfer; his supportive younger brother William A. Hayfer; his daughter K.S. (Kim) Hayfer-Noh whom he could chat with for hours; his son-in-law Youngam Noh whom he often bragged about being a “champion”; his first grandson Remington Jameson Noh whom he enjoyed telling bed time stories to; his second grandson Kenderson Camden Noh who he liked to sneak snacks to when mom wasn’t looking; and his granddaughter Capria Milani Noh whom he exchanged lots of smiles with. Dave was highly intelligent, hard-working, yet he was the most thoughtful and generous person you could meet. Even near the end, he was sensitive to being a burden on anyone, and always felt it was important to keep an open mind and to play devil’s advocate. Dave had a heart of gold and will be sorely missed.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests for donations to made in honor of Dave to NEDA, the National Eating Disorder Association, to help raise awareness and support to other families also tremendously impacted by BED. More people suffer from BED than anorexia and bulimia combined.
The memorial service will be held at 4pm with visitation from 3:30pm on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021 at Flanner & Buchanan, Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250, (317) 849-3616.
