Daniel C. Orcutt, 82, the visionary force behind the planning and development of Indianapolis International Airport and the Metropolitan Indianapolis Airport System, passed away Monday, January 21, 2019. Dan was born April 7, 1936, in New York City to Daniel J. and Leonora A. Orcutt. Dan was a 1954 graduate of Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY, and a 1961 Business School graduate of Syracuse University. He served four years in the US Air Force between high school and college.
Dan is survived by his childhood sweetheart, Nancy V. Cox, whom he married on March 5, 1960, and his sister, Heath Abert. He will be missed by his loving children: daughters Kendra Orcutt (Kent Graber) of Norman, Oklahoma, Kari Skarvan (Dennis) of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Mary Baker (Tom) of Larkspur, Colorado, son, Dan Orcutt (Terry) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his 13 grandchildren Scott (Elizabeth) Koorsen, Aja, Shae and Heath Orcutt, Jennifer, Kate and Todd Skarvan, Meagan and Tyler Baker, Jackie, Daniel, Tori and Colby Orcutt; 3 great-grandchildren Lucas, Oliver and Samuel Koorsen, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Tom and Paul Orcutt.
Dan was the Executive Director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority for 25 years, retiring in 1995. He was an active member of the American Association of Airport Executives, became an Accredited Airport Executive, and eventually served as President of the organization. He was especially proud of the young people he mentored in an internship program he established. Prior to his service in Indianapolis, Dan was Director of Airports for Oklahoma City.
His favorite hobby was flying. He and his wife Nancy owned several different aircraft during their marriage. Dan held a commercial pilot’s certificate for 35 years until a heart attack intervened in 1991. Dan was a devoted father and grandfather who loved attending all family sporting and school events as well as being an avid woodworker in his workshop.
Flanner Buchanan-Speedway will be handling funeral arrangements. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 PM on Friday, February 1, 2019. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019, from 2:00-3:00 PM at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th Street, Speedway, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 2, 2019, at St. Christopher Catholic Church. Burial will follow at West Ridge Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rock Steady Boxing of Brownsburg or Robey Elementary School to support their HOSTS reading program.
