Dale E. Kann

January 6, 1942 — November 8, 2017

Carmel, IN

Dale E. Kann, 75 of Carmel, IN passed away on November 8, 2017. He was born in Shippensburg, PA to the late Edwin A. and E. Marie (Riggs) Kann in 1942. Dale married his high school sweetheart Rosalyn “Rosie” M. Gayman and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. Dale graduated from Shippensburg High School in 1959. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from Shippensburg State College in 1963 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Indiana University in 1965.

Mr. Kann spent his entire career at Eli Lilly and Co. starting as an associate accountant in 1965. After completing the corporate trainee program, he was named manager of accounting operations for Eli Lilly international Corporation. In 1971, he was named director of financial planning and development for Elizabeth Arden, Inc. another Lilly subsidiary, and in 1973 became its treasurer. In 1975 he was named Director of Finance for Lilly International and in 1977 became corporate controller for Lilly. He was named Executive Director of information systems, materials planning and purchasing in 1979. He took a medical retirement from Lilly in 1988. He recently retired from the board of directors of the Shippensburg University Foundation after serving for nearly 30 years.

In spite of all of the academic and professional achievements, he was the most proud of his family. He and Rosie spent most of their time traveling the country with friends and family and sharing their lives with children and grandchildren, helping tie flies or cheering from the sidelines. His generosity knew no bounds and he formed lasting close relationships with nearly everyone he met. His professional relationships always became longtime friends who joined him fishing, hunting and traveling.

Starting as a farm boy in Pennsylvania, Dale accomplished amazing things and ended up traveling the world but at each stage, he always had an open seat at his table. He loved sharing ideas and learning new things. He modeled a strong work ethic and how to live according to solid moral principles. What he will be remembered for, however, is the warmth, friendliness and sense of humor that put everyone around him at ease. He was fiercely loyal and went to great lengths to protect and care for his family. He was greatly admired by his friends and family.

Dale is survived by his beloved wife, Rosie and his three children, Mandria K. Davis (M. Eric Davis) in Chapel Hill, NC, Kelly K. Davidson, (Scott A. Davidson), in Whitefish MT, and Ryan E. Kann (M. Suzanne Hall Kann) in Whitefish MT, his sister Barbara Beard (Lawrence Beard), his brother Carroll A. Kann (Joyce Kann), Eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who all mourn this loss.
