Claude Richard "Dick" Duncan

July 26, 1946 — February 15, 2020

Avon, Indiana

Claude “Dick” Duncan, 73, of Avon, passed away on February 15, 2020. He was born on July 26, 1946, in Linton, Indiana. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Lucy Buell Duncan. He is also survived by his daughters Tracy Jo Fox (Dave) and Joey Renee Lane (Harold); siblings Darral Duncan (Dona) and Donetta Duncan. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Elnora Duncan and brother Larry Duncan.

Dick grew up in Coal City, Indiana, enjoying the outdoors and basketball. He was the star player for the Coal City Colts where he met the love of his life, Lucy, a cheerleader at rival Clay City High School. After high school, Dick began work at Detroit Diesel Allison/Allison Transmission where he was elected committeeman for the United Auto Workers, serving the membership for many years. Dick retired as a benefits representative after more than 30 years of service.

He filled his life with family and friends, sharing his love of hunting, fishing and nature. Dick trained a national champion bird dog, TJ’s Jill, and spent much time with friends on hunting trips and at field trials. Later in life, he spent time fishing at his farm in Owen County and sharing the beautiful grounds with fellow anglers, hunters, birdwatchers and others.

Once his daughters began swimming, Dick and Lucy became officials rising to the highest caliber. Dick was a renowned starter for USA Swimming and the NCAA, starting many championship swim meets and serving as a deck official at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. He had also been selected to serve as starter for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Dick’s family extended to friends who were shown the same kindness, humor and love regardless of where they met. His reputation as a fair and funny official who always put the best interest of the athlete first allowed him to mentor countless officials, who all became fast friends. Dick’s legacy will live on in the hearts and lives of the countless people he touched with his generous spirit.
