Clarence Lawson Close of Lafayette died January 17, 2018 at the age of 102 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Tiskilwa, Illinois he was the son of Clarence Close and Nellie Norton. During his High School days, Clarence worked on a farm and enjoyed playing basketball. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy in 1935 where he served his country for 10 years which included World War II and Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Wasmuth. He then returned home and married Freida Laverne Close and worked at Anderson Motor Freight until his retirement in 1978.
He will be remembered as a wonderful and kind father who was always fair and would do anything for his family. His hobbies included bowling, fishing and gardening. He was a great story teller and had many funny stories to share about his adventures with his siblings when he was a child. In his final years, he enjoyed time his family and relaxing with the grand dog, Elfie. He made many new friends, sang and played cards during his time at Joyful Journey. Last December, he participated in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Service and was very honored to be asked to participate in this service.
Clarence leaves behind his daughter Linda Phifer (Terry); daughter-in-law Theresa Close; nine grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Freida; son Michael Close last year; brothers Robert and Marcel Close, sisters Ruby Downard and Merta Close.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 19 at 3 PM with visitation 2 PM until the time of service. Burial will follow with military honors at Washington Park North Cemetery.
