Christy Angela Jernigan departed this life on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. She is resting in the embrace of the Lord and rejoicing in the reunion of loved ones who went before her.
Chris was the daughter of the late James and Faith Jernigan. She was born in Hartford City, Indiana on December 14, 1948. She graduated from Hartford City High School in 1967. Chris was briefly married to David Yount. She was predeceased by her sister Elaine (Mike) Underwood and Laura (Jeff) Parker as well as sister-in-law Teresa (James) Jernigan and brother-in-law Robert (Mary Ann) Cockerel. She is survived by siblings Jennifer and Martina Jernigan, Mary Ann Cockerel and James Jernigan, brothers-in-law Michael Underwood and Jeff Parker, as well as many much-loved and cherished nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Chris’ wishes there will be no viewing. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 2:00 pm at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, 6000 West 34th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46234.
Chris worked many different jobs throughout her life: store clerk, bank bookkeeper, and factory worker, among others. But the job she liked best was as a houseparent at the Indiana School for the Deaf. Chris loved her Elementary boys from 1988 until her retirement in 2010.
Chris was a quiet person who tended to shun the spotlight if possible. But underneath the shy exterior Chris had a risqué sense of humor. She loved to laugh and was willing to act silly with family and friends to elicit a laugh. Chris could be extremely frugal and responsible with money but was always happy to make sure her many live-in visitors, so loved by Chris, had everything they might possibly want or need.
Chris will be loved and missed by her family and friends until we meet again. Her family would like to acknowledge the help and support provided by our loved friend/sister Rebecca Madigan. It is a debt of love that can never be repaid. Free from pain and enjoying her well-earned reward.
In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite pet charity.
