Charles Russell Bachman, Jr, of Carmel, IN, passed away peacefully at the age of 86, on Monday, October 1, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Russ was born April 11, 1932 in Reading, PA to the late Charles R. and Josephine McQuail Bachman of Wayne, PA. He attended Peirce College in Philadelphia, PA, received a B.A. from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA and was a US Army Veteran.
Russ started his career in the Paperboard and Packaging industry with Weyerhaeuser Corporation in Baltimore, MD. He joined Inland Container Corporation (Temple Inland) and worked for them for over 35 years, retiring as Vice President of Manufacturing in 1999 from their Indianapolis Corporate Offices.
Russ has been described by many as a humble, thoughtful, and gracious man with a servant’s heart. As an active member of St Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Carmel, Russ was the Chairperson of the Development Leadership Committee (DLC) overseeing the building of a new three-phased campus from its initial design and fundraising stages through its completion in 2009. He was a vestry member and served as Senior Warden. Most recently, Russ was co-chairperson of the Columbarium Committee which designed the columbarium and its beautiful surrounding gardens. In addition, he was an active member of Sertoma (Service to Mankind) serving as Chairman of the National Heritage Committee which oversees the Sertoma Broad Ripple annual essay-contest for students in the sixth grade throughout Marion and Hamilton Counties. He was also the Chairman of the awards Committee which nominates and rewards The Sertoman of the Year and The Service to Mankind Award winner given to a citizen in the community who provides extraordinary service to those in need. Russ was a member of the Westfield Youth Assistance program where he provided mentoring for a young teenager for many years. While residing in Gettysburg, PA., Russ was a member of Rotary and chaired The United Way campaign.
Russ and his wife, Shirley loved to spend time with their family and grandchildren. They enjoyed traveling, playing golf, antiquing, gardening, and spending time with their dear friends. Russ was an accomplished oil painter, letter writer and enjoyed fishing.
Russ leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley; his children, Paula B. Johnson (David) of Hopewell Junction, NY, Laura B. Tweedy (Jeffrey) of Carmel, IN and Samuel Brook Bachman (Carmella) of Streamwood, IL; his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Poppy”, Kaitlyn (Tyler), Leigh (Kevin), Grace (Leon), Emily, Holly, Palmer, Ryan, Tracy and Allison; sister, Harriet P. F. Bachman; brothers, Edward E. and Robert M. Bachman (Clare), as well as many precious nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 27 at 2:00pm. The family will receive visitors preceding the service at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one of Russ’s favorite projects, the Columbarium at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 1402 West Main Street, Carmel, IN 46033.
