Charles “Charlie” H. Eaton Jr., 91, passed away peacefully November 21st, 2020. He was born August 7th, 1929, in Hammond, Indiana, to parents Charles and Dorothy (Johnson) Eaton.
Charlie grew up in Hammond, living there until he completed high school. Upon graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. He achieved the rank of Corporal and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. In his later years, Charlie was able to take part in Indy Honor Flight, visiting the astounding war memorials of Washington, DC.
Charlie worked in the transmission department at Chrysler for many years before retiring.
On November 19th, 1977, Charlie married the love of his life, Betty Mae. They shared 36 wonderful years of marriage together. Betty passed away March 3rd, 2013.
Those who knew Charlie will remember him as a loving, welcoming gentleman. He never knew a stranger and made friends everywhere he went. Charlie loved to stay busy. In his earlier years, he enjoyed and excelled at photography. Gardening was also a passion. The house he shared with Betty was beautifully planted with a variety of flowers in the front yard. The back yard was dedicated to his vegetable gardens, which he loved to harvest and use for his meals.
“Gemming” and making jewelry were passions for Charlie, as well. He loved searching for and collecting gems, taking them back to his little workshop, and making jewelry for himself, family and friends. The time, effort and creativity in each piece, truly made them works of art.
Charlie was a well-traveled man, visiting several foreign countries during his time in the Army. He also enjoyed traveling for leisure. In 2000, he, Betty, and their family took a memorable trip to Hawaii and Charlie fell in love with the islands.
Charlie lived a very full life and made an impact on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
He and his wife, Betty, will be laid to rest together at Memorial Park Cemetery.
