Charles "Charlie" Hines

November 30, 1931 — February 11, 2020

Indianapolis, Indiana

Charles “Charlie” R. Hines, 88, passed away February 11, 2020. He was born November 30, 1931, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Charles T. and Mattie Hines. Charlie is survived by his son, Mark Hines of Texas; daughter, Brenda Hines of Arizona; and stepson, David Moore of Indianapolis. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Sara (Nicholas) Sabloff of New York and Fatehpal (Sat Darshan) Khalsa of New Mexico; four great-grandchildren, Amrit Hari, Preet Vedya, Edith Louise, and Sylvie Marie; two nieces, Paula (Louis) McIntosh and Carol McAdams of Indianapolis; and his beloved cat, Lucy. Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Lois E. Hines; son, Greg S. Hines; and sister, Betty J. McAdams.

Charlie graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1949. He went on to attend Butler University, where he studied Architecture. Charlie was employed for many years by Western Electric, where he managed the Accounting and Personnel departments. Upon retiring from Western Electric, he established his own Tax Accounting business. Charlie was well respected and sought after for his knowledge and management skills. Everyone marveled at his ability to calculate math in his head quicker than you could enter it into a calculator. After closing his tax business, he continued to work, filing health insurance claims for a local doctor’s office.

Charlie was an avid bowler throughout his lifetime, beginning at 12 years of age. He bowled on several leagues, always carrying a high average in the 200’s. In his later years, he was able to continue his love for the game, enjoying Wii Bowling with his friends. One of his favorite times of year was Christmas. He looked forward to setting up his Christmas Village for others to enjoy. He was delighted when it was featured on a local news station one year. Charlie enjoyed family times, cruises, the Indianapolis Symphony and attending Amity United Methodist Church with his late wife, Lois. Charlie was proud of his family. He recently enjoyed one of the happiest moments of his life when his granddaughters brought his great-grandchildren to visit him. He beamed from ear to ear as he embraced each one of them. Charlie had a kind and loving spirit, always thinking of others. He was surrounded by wonderful friends and loved by all who knew him.
