Charles Abraham Freije

February 17, 1951 — February 5, 2022

Indianapolis, IN

Charles Abraham Freije 70, of Indianapolis Indiana was born on February 17th, 1951, and was preceded in death by Father John H. Freije, Mother Helen Capps Hewitt, and Brother, Best friend, & Business Partner John Freije, Jr. He joined them and our heavenly father on February 5th, 2022.
Charles was survived by his wife Debra Freije two daughters: Angela Blaize (Jason Blaize) and Carri Freije (Chris Barrington) and four grandsons Joseph Ebarb, Gabriel Ebarb, Abraham Barrington, Nicholas Blaize. Three siblings Patricia Gruner (Mike), Latifa Sparks, Jeff Hewitt (Renee)
Charles co-owned Freije and Sons Wholesale Distributing company with his father and siblings, then later partnered with his brother John and nephew David Freije to form Freije Paving. Charles was a lover of Notre Dame football and was often seen wearing his favorite Notre Dame ball cap and chewing on an unlit cigar. Charles was a lover of music and if he had a personal anthem My Way by Frank Sinatra was exactly that.
Charles wore many hats in his life, literally & figuratively. He was a pillar of the Freije Family. He was a husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle, cousin, friend, employer, and the entire family’s peacemaker & mediator. Some of his favorite memories were coaching softball for years & he served as President of the Girls Softball League in Plainfield, Indiana. He was proud that he worked with Pam Hall to help bring girls fast pitched softball to Plainfield High School. He loved all the girls he was proud to have coached over the years.
The man that had two daughters was blessed and in love with his four grandsons Joey, Gabe, Abe, & Nick. He had a special relationship with each of his grandsons. He thought of nephews David Freije, Jason Sparks, and Greg Freije as sons too. He would let you know how proud he was of them, whether you asked or not.
If he wasn’t driving around the city selling asphalt & concrete, you could find him at the office. He was a regular at the neighborhood tobacco shop at night hanging out with his good friends, playing lottery, & scratch offs.
Our dad loved life more than words can effectively express. We would like to thank brother-in-law James Rush for the gift of life thru kidney donation. Honorable mentions to Doctor Alvin Wee, Doctor Barry Freeman, Doctor Nupur Gupta, Nurse Sharon Ayers & all the amazing ladies he loved so much at the Meridian Street DaVita Clinic.
He fought hard through many medical battles. He was stubborn to a fault, but it would be a blessing that sustained him in the worst of times. He was the living definition of hard work and perseverance.
His last five years selling was spent with his daughter Carri. They had many adventures on the road together from Indianapolis to Daytona Beach, Florida. He enjoyed teaching Carri and his grandson Abraham all about old cinema, westerns, and music from his childhood. He was a drummer in the band “The Laymen” during the 1960’s. Dad loved The Beach Boys, Elvis, Sinatra, Chicago, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Olivia de Havilland, & most of all Carole Lombard.
Chuck is leaving a legacy and treasure behind filled with the funniest stories & the best business deals. Chuck also loved animals, especially dogs. He made sure before his passing to gift many of us a dog. He and his wife Debbie shared Annie & Einstein. Grandson Abraham was given Frida. Grandson Gabe was gifted Morty. His first wife Bonnie was gifted her beloved Lincoln (Annie’s brother.) He left all of us a living reminder of his love for us, after he was no longer here himself. He is forever loved and will not be forgotten. Legends never really die.
