Carolyn J. Horner

February 14, 1953 — March 11, 2021

Indianapolis, Indiana

Carolyn Horner passed away on March 11, 2021 on a gloomy, rainy day in Indy. It was not a coincidence that there was a bright ray of sun beating through the clouds at 9 AM. Carolyn was definitely being received in Heaven by her heavenly father and her parents, Jack and Audrey, who preceded her in death.

Carolyn left this earth with her sister, Linda, by her side. Linda was the constant protector of Carolyn, first protecting Carolyn as cruel children made her handicapped status difficult in elementary days, and later as Linda fought to ensure Carolyn had the healthiest and most full life as possible.

Carolyn was born in Indianapolis and grew up in the Broad Ripple area with her family. She moved to Pittsboro upon her parent’s retirement where she became an active member of the Pittsboro Baptist Church Choir. Carolyn loved to sing. She continued to belt out her favorite songs often serenading her unsuspecting neighbors at the nursing home.

Carolyn made friends easily. After relocating to Lexington to be with her sister, she loved to sit in the lobby of Friendship Towers and talk to other residents. Carolyn gave great compliments. She often referenced the other occupants of her retirement home and nursing home as “Young Lady” or “Young Man.” “Young lady, that’s a nice red shirt.” Carolyn apologized too much. She was perhaps the only person who ever worried more about the comfort of the people around her than she ever worried about anything she needed.

Carolyn loved to read, play bingo, bowl, and complete dot to dots. She loved pink and purple. Carolyn loved to do latch hook rugs. Her holiday wreath will remain a treasured family possession. Carolyn loved shrimp, chocolate covered strawberries, and diet cokes. Really, she loved most sweets, needing to try one of each cookie at any given holiday.

Carolyn’s family appreciates all those who helped her for her entire life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in Carolyn’s honor to either Hooverwood Living, 7001 Hoover Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46260 or to Life’s Journey Hospice, 10241 E Co Rd., 100 N Indianapolis, IN 46234.
