She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 6, 1946, the daughter of Patricia Aubele Smith and Ellsworth Smith. She was preceded in death by her brother Tom in 1967, and her parents.
She graduated with honors from Penn Hills High School where she was a majorette.
Carol graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh in 1967. She worked for thirty years as an operating room nurse. She also earned a BA degree from St Francis College.

Carol is also survived by six grandchildren who were the joy of her life. Anna and Michael Huse, Joseph, Gianna, Maria and Margaret Notarianni.
She had a deep love of horses and owned two beautiful Friesians. One that she rode. The other was trained and shown by Jennifer Conour throughout the Midwest in dressage shows, rising to the Grand Prix level. Over two decades, Carol was grateful for the friendship and love of her large family of “horse people” who remember her as outgoing, friendly and always smiling and upbeat.
In December 2008, Carol was blessed with a lung transplant which provided her with many years of life. She was always grateful to the anonymous donor.
