Carol Dustman Hoyt

December 30, 1899 — November 20, 2016

Devoted wife and mother Carol Dustman Hoyt, 53, of Carmel, Indiana passed away peacefully at home on November 20, 2016 surrounded by family and loved ones after a courageous struggle with cancer.

The youngest of five siblings, Carol graduated from North Central HS (’81), was active in Crestview Christian Church, attended Purdue University, and earned her BA from IUPUI.

Carol joined the sales staff of the original Theobald’s, working with fine china and the bridal registry for many years. Her keen sense of artistic design and sense of style were quickly recognized and she was promoted to designer and buyer for the store, roles that allowed her creativity to blossom and her aesthetic sense to shine. She added warmth and beauty to merchandise displays and to every interaction with colleagues and customers. It was there that she attracted the attention of her future husband, Alan, as he shopped for a special gift and ended up with an introduction and her phone number. Alan and Carol were married in 1989 and blessed with a son, Ethan Hoyt, twelve years later.

Carol always knew that she wanted a life centered on her marriage, home and family where she could share and spread her warmth and love to others. As an involved parent, she volunteered for many years in the library at Mohawk Elementary working with a generation of students. She and Alan were frequent supporters at school functions, choral concerts, recitals and orchestra performances. Carol created and lived the life she wanted, doing exactly what she found meaningful and fulfilling as a wife, mother, homemaker, friend and neighbor.

Carol is survived by her beloved husband Alan, and son Ethan, siblings: Lee Dustman, Leslie Fenwick, Joan Chewning, and all of her extended family: Jim and Marty Hoyt, Linda and Curt Curts, Jon Hoyt, Robert Hoyt and Anne Lyons. Predeceased by father William Dustman and mother Joyce Dustman, and sister Diane Dustman.

Throughout her illness Carol maintained her positive attitude and concern for others, culminating with a recent Celebration of Life with friends, neighbors and family. She was characteristically sharp and witty, often reminding us of events and details that others had long forgotten. Her genuine kindness and buoyant spirit will be very much missed. Her sense of humor and the sound of her laughter will never be replaced.
