Carol Ann O’Neal Burke Obituary
Carol was born on May 31, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana. During her school years she
attended St. Christopher and St. Mary Academy. Speedway was her lifelong place of
residence. Her parents, Jack and Carolyn O’Neal, husband Jay Burke, sister Janet
O’Neal Dizney (John) and grandson Michael Crouch, preceded her in death.
Carol is survived by three daughters; Nancy Forrest Schmitz (Dave), Sally Forrest
Crouch (Bryan) and Susan Forrest Mantyla (Derek), six grandchildren; Kevin and
Austin Crouch, Riley and Drew Schmitz, Abby and Elizabeth Mantyla. She is also
survived by her sister Nancy O’Neal Lawrence (Ray).
Carol was a stay at home mother when her daughters were young. Being a girl scout
leader to her girls brought her great joy as did spending summer days with them at
Westwood Swim Club. Carol loved playing tennis and participating in a card club with
her Speedway friends back in the day. For years, friends and family would gather at
her house for the best Indy 500 parties. Carol worked for the Care Center at Methodist
Hospital and then Partners in Care in Danville until her retirement. Since her retirement
she had been active at the Speedway American Legion and in a knitting club. She
looked so forward to the Legion opening up again so she could hang out with her
friends and enjoy her favorite fried chicken. In the past few years Carol gained a
passion for cooking and took pride in trying and sharing new recipes. She was quite
the QVC shopper and most of all, she just loved to have conversations. Anybody who
knew her well could count on a conversation lasting a long time. She will be missed by
all who loved her.
Due to the mandates regulating gathering numbers and social distancing protocol, the
services and burial will be private for family members and a few close lifelong friends
only. Carol’s family will celebrate her life on Friday, June 12th at Washington Park North
where she will also be buried. The family appreciates the love, support, and prayers
they have all received from so many. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be
made to either Speedway American Legion Post 500 or Riley Children’s Hospital
