Carl R. Yost, Jr. “Bob”, 80 of Carmel, passed away at his home Thursday, June 25, 2020. Bob was born December 18, 1939 in St. Joseph, MO to the late Col. Carl R. and Helen Yost. While his father fought in WWII, Bob was raised at his grandparent’s farm in Harvard, Nebraska. He later reflected that his experiences during this time shaped who he became as an adult. His passion for the outdoors, his devotion to his family, and his hard work ethic took seed on the farm — as did close relationships with his aunts, uncles and cousins who he considered his immediate family.
As the son of an US Army Colonel, Bob lived in many states, as well as internationally in Iran, Germany and France. He returned to the US to finish high school, and later met the love of his life, Carolyn, at the University of Missouri, where he studied Forestry. Bob was in the ROTC. After college Bob and Carolyn were married, then he began his active duty in US Army in Artillery. After serving his country, he began a lifetime career in the lumber industry.
Bob served as a branch manager in the wholesale lumber business for over 40 years. He started with the Weyerhaeuser Company, then Schultz, Snyder and Steele and retired from North Pacific Lumber in 2009.
Bob joined the Carmel Rotary Club where he served as social chairman for many years. He enjoyed volunteering with Gleaners Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, and at local schools. Bob was named Carmel Rotarian of the Year in 2013 and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
Bob was also an avid runner, completing over 25 marathons including the Boston Marathon in 1988. This passion for running inspired all three of his kids to also run marathons and for his wife to co-found the All-Star Cross Country Camp. He later expanded his running to competing in triathlons. When Bob could no longer run, he swam every day at the Monon Community Center.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carolyn; children, Karl S. (wife, Yvonne) Yost, Kathryn Y. (husband, Noel) Saturay, Jennifer Y. (husband, Paul) Davison; grandchildren, Karl M., Anna K. and Henry A. Yost, Sophia K. and William H. Davison; sister, Nancy (husband, Dennis) Thorell. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Crabtree and brother-in-law, Gary Crabtree
A virtual service is planned for Saturday, July 11.
