Calvin Nicklaus "Nic" Steussy, Jr.

March 26, 1954 — September 11, 2024

Indianapolis, IN

Calvin Nicklaus Steussy, Jr., better known as Nic, was born on March 26, 1954, and grew up in New Castle, Indiana. During his undergraduate years at Carleton College (Northfield, Minnesota) he met his wife-to-be, Marti, and became a devotee of the liberal arts. He loved to read the New York Times, and at Christmas his stack of new books would run to 18 inches or more. He enjoyed learning about biology, history, archeology, computing, economics, politics, and environmental issues, alongside a steady diet of historical and science fiction novels. After college he earned an MD, became a board-certified Family Physician, and practiced for a number of years in Springfield, Tennessee. In the 1990s he returned to IU Med for a PhD, and spent the last two decades of his life doing protein crystallography at Purdue.

His greatest loves, however, were gift-giving and family. He is survived by his wife Marti and children David and Cally, to whom he read Lord of the Rings aloud by the fire. He is also mourned by his siblings Cally Parkinson, Helen Steussy, Edwin Steussy, and Chris Steussy.

Nic unexpectedly died on Sept 11, 2024, of a pulmonary embolism. A memorial service will be held at Central Christian Church (701 N Delaware) in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Sept 18, 3:00 pm, with a reception following.

Donations in honor of Nic may be made to Paws on My Heart (Carmel, IN) or Carleton College.
