CALVIN CHAMPNEY FRANKLIN was born June 1, 1933, to the late James Wallace and Fannie, in Atlanta, Georgia.
CALVIN was affectionately called “Franklin” by his friends and family. He accepted Christ early in life and was baptized at Montgomery Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, Alabama by his grandfather Rev. Isaac C.H. Champney. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, he attended Morehouse College.
FRANKLIN proudly enlisted into the United States Army to serve his country and was part of the 101 Airborne Division during the Korean War.
FRANKLIN moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1956. He was united in holy matrimony to Marie Chapman on December 13, 1958.
After moving to Indiana, he continued his education and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from Indiana University. In 1982, he was initiated into Kappa Zeta Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha (The National Political Science Honor Society).
FRANKLIN was a hardworking man. He was employed at Ford Motor Company, where he retired after 25 years as a supervisor.
FRANKLIN was a distinguished man who dedicated his life with making a difference in the community. His community involvement included being on the board of Head Start; Get out to vote with Dr. Andrew Brown; 1st African American War board chairman; Chairman of Pike Township (1972); Executive board member of Indianapolis Preschool Corporation; NAACP, Urban League and he initiated the Black History Program for Central Lodge #1.
FRANKLIN was a devoted member of Covenant Community Church where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the Persian Temple #46 Constantine Consistory #25 and Central Lodge #1.
FRANKLIN was family oriented and there was nothing that gave him greater joy than spending time with his love ones. He was a brilliant man who enjoyed the holidays, music, traveling, reading and was an avid sports fan.
CALVIN CHAMPNEY FRANKLIN departed this life on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister and a daughter.
FRANKLIN leaves many to cherish his love and memory; his loving wife, Marie Chapman Franklin of 60 years; daughter, Engela (Frank) Barnes, Indianapolis, IN; grandson, Charles Mays, Indianapolis, IN; sister, Frances Wyatt of Rochester, NY; two sisters-n-law, Forstene Boles, Indianapolis, IN and Olean Brown, Memphis, TN; two brothers-n-law, Sylvester Chapman, North Lake, IL and Dr. Terrel (Jeane) Chapman, Memphis, TN and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, extended family and friends.
