CARMEL - Brent K. Sutton (84) passed peacefully at home on July 21, 2024, surrounded in love by his family and following a five-year battle against cancer.
Brent was born in Indianapolis on May 3, 1940, to the late Dr. William E. and Helen M. Sutton. He was educated at Broad Ripple High School (Senior Class President 1958; member of State Championship HS Wrestling Team) and Wabash College (BA) where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and The Scarlet Masque. For several years he served as class agent for the Wabash class of 1962. He attended Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh) and Indiana University (MBA) before receiving his Personal Financial Planning certification when living in Denver, Colorado.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965 in Saigon, Vietnam, as a specialist in the 27th Data Processing Unit. After his military service, Brent worked as a Professional Stage Manager at New York City's Lincoln Center with productions featuring Richard Chamberlain, Ann Bancroft, Robert Duvall, Diana Sands and George C. Scott. Later he stage managed at the Berkshire Theatre in Stockbridge Massachusetts in productions directed by Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Arthur Penn and Ulu Grosbard. Following his return to Indianapolis, Brent worked in financial areas for the Equitable Life Assurance Society, The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and as Controller for Alfa Laval Corporation. Later in life, he joined Charles Schwab as a licensed securities broker. Brent authored two books on personal finance. He served on the board of the Indianapolis Association of Wabash Men, Phoenix Theatre, Crown Hill Cemetery Historical Society and Indy Saves.
Brent loved his jazz music and studied the history of blues and jazz. With wife and good friends, he returned to New Orleans numerous times to listen to their favorite jazz artists. Throughout his life, he was engaged and passionate about the performing arts. He and Nancy were longtime members of the local Players theatrical group.
Brent was known for his genuine appreciation and curiosity of all people and their stories. He was the glue, great connector, and everyday cheer-leader. His deepest commitment was to his family, including his wife of 57 years, Nancy Campbell Sutton, with whom he raised three cherished daughters: Wendy Horn (Richard), grandson Mitchell; Cynthia Freiwald (Jim), granddaughters Madeline and Allison Gladstone (Jordan) and three great grandchildren Emmy, Eliza and Jovi; Stephanie Payne (Douglas), grandson William and granddaughter Sophia. He is also survived by his dear brother Mark Sutton (Dianne).
Brent's family extends their sincere appreciation to the caregivers at Community North Hospital and the Community oncology, hospice and homecare teams for their loving care and support.
A memorial service followed by a fellowship reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 8 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis. Memorial, contributions may be made in Brent's honor to his beloved Wabash College, 301 W. Wabash Avenue, Crawfordsville, IN 47933.
