Beverly E. (Swanson) Etherington

Beverly Etherington, 93, was an amazing woman. She was a loving wife and mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mentor, sister, and loyal friend. She passed away peacefully in Indianapolis on Wednesday, August 4, 2021.

Beverly is survived by her brother, Carl Swanson Jr, her 3 children: Scott Etherington (Christine), Nancy Sullivan (Mike), Janet Dicken (Kent), her 7 grandchildren: Christopher Hoppen, Jason Hoppen, Kelly Sullivan, Mark Etherington, Austin Dicken, Sean Sullivan, Sam Dicken, and 6 great grandchildren: Drew, Emily, Makayla, Abigail, Lucille, and Sophie.

Beverly, the daughter of Carl W. and Francis D.(Hornkohl) Swanson was born October 14, 1927 in New Britain, CT. Raised in New Britain, she grew up in the Great Depression and then lived through World War II during her high school years. Beverly did her part belonging to the “Greatest Generation.” She was intelligent, educated, resourceful, independent, creative, and giving… Oh so giving! She was always a woman ahead of her time, though she was never “on time!”

After high school, Beverly moved to Indianapolis to join her family. She attended Butler University to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a Pharmacist. Marshall and Beverly met and fell in love while attending Butler. They married after their junior year in Pharmacy School and together received their degrees. Beverly worked as a pharmacist for 50 years and was a Girl Scout Leader and Trainer for 25 years. She was very involved in, and an active member of Church of the Savior UMC for over 60 years! She was also active in her Pharmacy sorority. She played golf and bridge, and enjoyed skiing and tennis in her younger years. She planned fantastic family vacations resulting in many adventures. She loved to travel, and travel she did! She visited all 50 states and several countries throughout the world.

Beverly was unfailingly kind and honest and lived her life giving to others. She was interested in everyone and loved to hear their stories. She searched for ways to help others and to make a difference in the world. She was smart and creative, a lifelong seeker of knowledge and a collector of shells, leaves, rocks, 4 leaf clovers, and friends. She loved history, nature, cats, games, and the color blue. She was bigger than life and lived every day to the fullest. Thank you, Mom! We love you forever!

We celebrate her life at 1 pm on Sat. Aug. 21, 2021 at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian St. Service begins at 2 pm. Please wear masks, and we prefer all attendees be vaccinated. We will be social distancing.

Flowers are always welcome or donations in Beverly’s honor can be made to Girl Scouts of Central Indiana or the American Diabetes Association. But most of all we hope you’ll join in celebrating Beverly’s life.
