Betty Ruth Whittaker, a beloved schoolteacher and devoted mother, passed away in Westfield, Indiana, on May 9, 2024, at the age of 81.
Born on August 5, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, Betty's journey through life was marked by unwavering commitment and a love for teaching. She embarked on her teaching career in Wheaton, Illinois, and later continued her passion at Carmel Jr. High School, Carmel High School and finishing her teaching journey at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indiana. Specializing in teaching Latin and English, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her students, finding joy in every moment spent enlightening young minds.
Betty's educational pursuits led her to graduate from Monmouth University and subsequently earn a master's degree from Butler University, all in pursuit of fulfilling her passion for teaching. Her proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly the years she spent shaping young lives as a schoolteacher. Her genuine care and commitment towards her students were evident in the collection of letters and cards she cherished from past students, parents, and colleagues alike. She took immense pleasure in staying connected with her students beyond the classroom, following their journeys even after they had graduated.
Beyond her career, Betty was a pillar of strength for her family. Described as a rock by those who knew her best, she was always there to provide support and guidance with unwavering honesty. Her dedication to caring for others extended beyond the classroom walls, whether brightening young minds or spending quality time with loved ones, Betty's kindness and generosity touched many hearts.
Betty is survived by her sons, grandchild, siblings and many other family members and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert F. Moore and Marcella M. (Matthews) Moore.
Visitation for Betty will be from 1-2pm on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Our Lady of Peace Mausoleum Chapel – 9001 Haverstick Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46240. A Sharing of Memories will take place at 2pm, with friends and family members coming together to briefly share their favorite memories of Betty. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
