Betty Rose Owens, 91, of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2017.
She was born on November 9, 1925 in Irvine, KY as the youngest of 3 children born to Burpee A. and Minnie Alice (Goff) Chandler. Betty was a high school graduate and worked during WWII in the defense industry; spending time in the pentagon and washing airplanes. She married Gilbert H. Owens in 1944 and they relocated to Indianapolis to find work. Betty first worked on the assembly for Eli Lily, later transferring to the clean room sterilizing bottles.
She then began work for Western Electric, where she gave 25 years of service before her retirement in 1981. Betty was a member of the Pioneers Club, a club for those who have worked in the telephone industry for 20+ years and the IBEW Union. She was also a lifetime member of the OES Cumberland Chapter 515 and attended Mt. Calvary Evangelistic Temple.
Betty was an avid reader of anything she could get her hands on. She was also an avid gardener, tending to her precious roses. On her own, Betty enjoyed quilting and leather crafting; and spent time square dancing with her husband before his death in 2002.
She is survived by 1 son; and 4 grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband; 1 daughter; and both of her siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 11am at Flanner and Buchanan – Washington Park East. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services, also at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery.
