Beryl A. Mcallen

July 15, 1935 — May 14, 2022

Indianapolis, IN

Beryl (Hoppes) McAllen, 86, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2022 at the home of her son & daughter-in-law.  She had been well cared for by Community Health Network Hospice.  She was born July 15, 1935 to the late Don & Helen Hoppes.

A lifelong resident of the far eastside of Indianapolis, Beryl was a 1953 graduate of Warren Central High School.  She had many lifelong eastside friends and neighbors and was active with the school’s reunion committee.  After graduation, Beryl worked at the Naval Ordnance Plant/Avionics Facility Indianapolis (1953-58) where she met her husband, John – a cute, young Purdue engineer who used to frequent the Coca Cola machine to meet up with Beryl.  They married in 1957 and spent 53 years together.  She also worked at Johnson Controls from 1972-1986.

Beryl and John shared a lake cottage with her siblings and their spouses in Columbia City, IN, for nearly 30 years.  They had decades of wonderful memories with family and friends – cooking and eating great food, swimming and fishing, cocktail cruises on the pontoon boat, picking blueberries and, of course, doing lots and lots of projects on the cottage and grounds together.  Beryl is best known for her big smile and dimple, her spunk, candor and quick wit, her frugality, her thoughtfulness, and her immeasurable love for those in her life – especially her four grandchildren and two great granddaughters.

Beryl is survived by children Anne Martino, John (Kathleen) McAllen Jr, and Colonel Maureen McAllen (USAF); grandchildren Chris Martino, Erin (Thomas) Winders, Lauren (Kevin) Sloat and Scott McAllen; great grandchildren Leigh Ann and Sophia Winders; brother Floyd (Joan) Hoppes and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband John McAllen, brother Bob Hughes, and sisters Faye Pope, Donna Markland, and Iris Cesnik.

Her visitation and funeral will be at Memorial Park, 9350 Washington Street on Tues, May 24th starting at 10 am.  A service will begin at 11 am with lunch for all guests served following.  Her son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathleen, invite family and friends to their home 2-6pm for sharing and fellowship.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Little Star Center, the organization that has served Beryl’s grandson Scott McAllen so well for more than 10 years.

Options include online at Donate to Support People With Autism | LittleStar ABA Therapy or checks mailed to  Little Star ABA Therapy Center, 550 Congressional Blvd. Suite 220, Carmel, IN 46032.
