Barry Emerson Turvy was born on January 6, 1972, in Columbus, Ohio, to parents Cindy M. Shaw Turvy and Charles E. Turvy. He died at age 50 in his Westfield, Indiana, home on October 30, 2022. Barry grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and frequently visited his dad in Chillicothe after his parents divorced. Barry graduated from Westland High School, where he was senior class president. He was admired there for his talents on the football field and in the classroom.
Barry received a BA in zoology and chemistry in 1994 from Miami University in Ohio. He cherished his years as a varsity cheerleader for the football and basketball teams at Miami. He was an active member of Theta Chi at Miami and loved the brotherhood he had there. His friends said that Barry loved all things Miami. Later, Barry furthered his education receiving his MBA with a major in finance from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Indianapolis.
Barry married Diane Andis in Indianapolis in 1996. They lovingly raised sons, Jack, born in 2000, and Andrew in 2002. Barry’s beloved sons remember him as a fun-loving dad who was always involved in all their activities and taught them the value of education. He was always trying to make them laugh, sometimes with painful dad jokes. Barry loved the sun and the beach and traveling with his family. He was active in the Carmel Dad’s Club and thoroughly enjoyed coaching. He taught his boys to fish, and they spent many hours at the neighborhood pond. He was a dedicated and loyal Ohio State and Colts fan. He encouraged and supported Jack in scouting and was beyond proud when he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was always the loudest fan at both boys sporting events. Despite his loyalty to OSU, he didn’t hesitate to put on Indiana Hoosiers gear when Andrew joined the IU football team. Barry’s closest friends remarked that more than anything in this world, Barry was most passionate about his boys.
Early in his career he worked as a scientist at Cargill Corn Milling in Dayton, Ohio and at BAS Analytics in West Lafayette, IN. Later he would transition into the business side at Eli Lilly & Company and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Since 2009, Barry was a State Farm Insurance Agent in Westfield. Not surprising to those who knew Barry well, he received numerous awards and distinctions in his jobs throughout the years.
One aunt described her beloved nephew as “kind, understanding, caring, and patient, adding that he was ‘Mr. Personality,’ and was always positive.” She recalled that after storms, he called State Farm customers to check on them personally. Close friends remember that Barry loved puzzles, reading, and documentaries. He was easy to like, made friends everywhere he went, and was naturally funny.
Barry is survived by his sons, Jack and Andrew Turvy of Carmel, his mother, Cindy Turvy (Naomi Weinert) of Columbus, Ohio, Aunts Rosalee Blake and Susan Saunders, Uncle John (Linda) Turvy, close longtime friends Jason Ruzicka and Sean Hartman, cousins Chris Bergstrom (Sam Antrim), Christina Blake (Alla Olmstead), Jonathan Blake, Billy Saunders, Doug (Maria) Saunders, Alex (Devon) Turvy, and Kate Turvy, former wife Diane Turvy, along with extended family John and Marie Andis, Missy and Jason Brauer, Susan and Chris Herzog, nephews Will, Trent and Blake Brauer and nieces Christy and Kellie Herzog.
Barry was preceded in death by his dad, Charles Turvy in 2008, Uncle Wade Turvy, Jr, Cousin Jason Branch, and maternal grandparents of Chardon, Ohio, and paternal grandparents of Dayton, Ohio.
