Barbara J. Ward

Barbara J. Ward, 82 of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday October 29, 2021 at home, with her devoted husband by her side. She was born on November 24, 1938 in Indianapolis, IN to the late David A. Alderson and Martha Lucille Ragsdale. She grew up in the Irvington area and graduated from Howe High School in 1956.  In 1968, Barbara and her family moved to New Palestine, IN.   She worked for many years at Liberty Bell Carpets and Madden Furniture, and then served as the receptionist at Washington Park East Cemetery before retiring.

Barbara had a warm personality, a beautiful smile and enjoyed cooking, baking and loved to entertain, especially for the holidays.  She was passionate about her gardening, enjoyed decorating and completing many home projects.  She was also a very talented seamstress and even made her own dress for her high school prom. Barbara loved to spend time with her family and friends, and her warm heart and bright smile will be missed by all.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of over 33 years, Richard L. “Dick” Ward; sons, Douglas (Lynn) Christopher and David Christopher; daughter, Lisa (Troy) Hershberger;  step-son Brian (Kim) Ward,  step-daughter Lisa Walker,  twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, brother, Jim (Susan) Ragsdale; and her beloved canine companion, Zoe. She is preceded in passing by her sister, Martha “Marty” Ragsdale.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday November 12, 2021 at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229), where a celebration of life service will begin at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice (please specify “hospice” in the gift designation).
